However if you are not Omani, you’d notice that the celebration is quite different from the usual birthday party.

This is because we are celebrating it the simple Omani way..

It is on the day the child is born likewise, but by the Lunar calendar, the hijri/Islamic calender. For baby R, it was on the 2nd Ramadan, 1434 (11/07/2013). It is known as the child’s “hol hol- حول حول” the /h/ is a voiceless phoneme here. Hawl (or hol in Omani dialects) in Arabic means a year. This celebration is only done as a child completes a year of his/her life. Some anecdotal evidence suggest that this celebration was done before to show gratitude to God and happiness that the child did survive till the age of one in a time children’s survival was rare due to hardships and poor health conditions.

Nowadays, it is replaced by the usual birthday parties. However, I believe kids should be aware of their tradition and enjoy the fun of it..In saying so, I still had a simple cake as probably to maintain the past and add some modern flavour :D…

I will leave you with the photos. Apologies for the poor quality as It was really dark and I didn’t use the camera flash.

This was the 'hol hol' of my kids' cousin a couple of months ago.I am putting it because the pic quality is better, we put the scarf on the child singing some old traditional song while throwing coins and popcorn for kids to pic..We did the same with baby R

  1. Interesting Ibtisam. I hope Ramadan is going well for you all.
Your little one is lovely. It’s interesting to hear about traditions in your country. We don’t have any special thing in France. We do celebarte with candles and family. Some people do throw big parties!!
    Sending you love from Paris.
